Facebook Vs. Myspace

By Van W

I’ve been comparing the two for a while now.

myspacelogoMyspace is a tad more private without the need to tinker with settings first. It’s a bit more turn-key and has more functions, primarly the blogging feathure.

facebook logoFacebook doesnt have one, instead it has “notes” which doesnt have rich formatting features (liike chancing font colors, etc) This is a big drawback for me because I love to write.

Another downside to Facebook is it’s cumbersome tabbing feature which doesnt allow custom flash applications so I cant embed my own music playlist – instead u have to choose from their “approved music providers” and it’s buried in a tab.

Last but not least……no custom profiles for Facebook. Everyone’s page looks identical. I thought people in large part had a desire to express their individuality.

Because Facebook is newer and is gear specifically for finding classmates, it’s doing well and beat myspace last quarter. I think this venue is also stealing away suckers who actually paid classmates.com in the past for their slow, laggy, featureless services, which didnt even have many classmates.

(Myspace salespeople must not be doing their job, because facebook you’ll notice has a shared link on the bottom of most news articles, myspace doesnt. This means facebook has been really hitting the pavement and selling their product)

I never liked the modified HTML platform of myspace which doesnt allow certain custom content or java applets, plus they change their hardcode every so often making cutom profiles which took a long time for us advanced users to create, useless. Im betting Myspace’s revision to 2.0 was a letdown for most and it did kill the coding on my latest greatest custom theme because they also revamped part of the code for 1.0 at the same time, which was one reason I checked this place out. (plus a gaggle of friends glommed here, sending me invites so how I could I refuse?)

But since most of the people I grew up around are hanging here on facebook I’ll continue to use it, but I sure wish you folks would reconsider Myspace and they’ve even made alot of improvements in the last few months.

I favor MySpace over Facebook for many of the same reasons as you.  I have “found” many lost classmates (and even relatives!) thanks to Facebook, but since there are so many relatives, I find myself reverting back to the “me” I was in younger days…. you know…..the nicer, well-mannered, politically-correct “me”.    Therefore, I tell my present-day friends that the Facebook “me” is who I used to be/would maybe like to be again, and the MySpace “me” is in fact who I really am, way deep down on the ugly side….and anyway, Van, if it weren’t for MySpace, we never in a million years would have met on FACEBOOK!  Now stick THAT in your pipe and smoke it!  :)
